Formerly known as Windstar Sail Cruises, the cruise line began in 1986 with one ship, the Windstar. Holland America Line purchase 50% of the cruise line in 1988. With Carnival Corporation owning Holland America Line it also meant it owned Windstar Cruises. In 2007, Carnival sold Windstar Cruises to Ambassador International. In 2011, Ambassador filed for bankruptcy.
Currently, Windstar Cruises is owned by Xanterra Parks and Resorts, the same company that manages Yellowstone National Park and Grand Canyon National Park. In 2012, the company has spent $18 million on a fleetwide renovation on Windstar Cruises’ three luxurious sailing yachts.
Their cruises offer formal elegance without formal wear, personal service and a wide choice of itineraries. They cruise to Mediterranean, Greek Isles, Caribbean, Northern Europe, and the Panama Canal. Their passenger loyalty program is called Foremast Club.
