Norwegian Cruise Line originally got its start as Norwegian Caribbean Line in 1966. It changed its name in the 1990’s to its current name. They currently operate 11 cruise ships with two more to be delivered through 2014. Their itineraries include Alaska, Caribbean, Hawaii, Europe, and the Mexican Riviera. All but one of NCL’s cruise ships are registered outside of the United States. This means that they recruit an international crew except for the ship, Pride of America which only employs Americans.
NCL markets the concept, Freestyle Cruising and appeals to mostly North American passengers, in particular families. They have extensive facilities and programming for children and teens ages two to 17. They also appeal to single travellers especially with their introduction of solo cabins.
The parent company of Norwegian Cruise Line is Genting Hong Kong (formerly Star Cruises Limited). Norwegian Cruise Line’s sister brand is Star Cruises. Together they are the third largest cruise operator in the world behind Carnival Corporation and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (RCCL).
